"Thar she blows" whale call: we were all too awestruck when the first whale breached clear of the water, only yards away, throwing a rainbow-hued arc of water off its sleek body while hurtling forty feet into the air.

Dominican Republic is fortunate to have one of the largest and best humpback breeding sanctuaries in the world. The Dominican government enforces strict whale protection laws and guidelines to ensure the safety and conservation of these wonderful animals. Whale watching can be a thrilling experience for anyone interested in nature and the preservation of our natural resources. We must continue to respect and protect these incredibly gentle giants so we can enjoy them for a long time to come.

Between January and March, up to 5,000 humpback whales make their way to Samaná Bay to mate. During this time, you can see male humpbacks standing on their tails, breaching, and generally acting like giant teenagers as they try to get female humpbacks to notice them. Taking a whale-watching tour from Samaná Bay during the season means you'll be just about guaranteed a sighting;
