I n Memory of Marshall Zipper
On Tuesday night, May 21st, 2009,
Marshall Zipper, founder and owner of
Rancho Wendy, passed away of a heart
attack. Marshall was a strong and
independent man and made an impression
on everyone that he meet. Those who had
the chance to meet him here will surely
not forget him.
He worked to help the
poor and bridge a gap of worlds with new
experiences. He always wanted people to
have the best experience that he could
provide. He will be missed. Ramona and
Wendy thank everyone for their support,
some of which we have put below.
- Rancho Wendy staff
I wish to
extend my condolences to
Ramona and Wendy and
family. I am very sad to
hear that Marshall has
passed away.
Goodbye Marshall a true
friend, I will miss you. We
had great fun and laughter
but always a tear when
leaving your place. I would
have come this year, but no
more. You were the spirit of
Rancho Wendy that what made
it a piece of paradise.

To
Marshall’s family,
I just heard that Marshall has
passed away and I wanted to extend my
condolences and prayers to the family. I
stayed at Rancho Wendy about three years ago
with my son Michael and his Boy Scout Troop
and we had a wonderful time. We still sit
around and tell stories of our stay there.
We
will all keep Marshall in our
hearts, and his family in our thoughts and
prayers.
Respectfully,
Debbie Sheppard, Boy Scout Troop 303

:( A good friend has died, and that inspired me to revisit the memories of my time, at his home, in the Dominican Republic, and post some pictures I haven't posted before.
Goodbye Marshall.

Oh my
goodness, I can't imagine Rancho
Wendy without Marshall! I am so
sorry to hear that. Tell his wife
and daughter my prayers are with
them. They will remember me, as I'm
the american "princess" as Marshall
called me and his wife boiled water
for me to take my shower when the
water heater broke.

So sorry
to hear that bad news, my thoughts
go out to his family, we visited in
2005 and had one of the best times
ever.

For the past four months I have worked and volunteered at the
Ranch, and have had quite an adventure and great learning
experience. Rancho Wendy offers a great chance to look up at the
open star-lit night sky with silhouettes of the rising
mountains; chances to work and talk with people from a
completely different world and still discover the things you
have in common. Enjoy trying new things, enjoying the basics and
opening up to the gorgeous landscape and people. Life's a
challenge - enjoy every part of it. Keith |
Fabio Rosario - New York, USA & Santiago, Dominican Republic: 12/2008 I want to thank you so much for the pictures that you have sent me and for all the help and support that you gave us on the killer trail tour that we took. Those pictures are beautiful and breathtaking. Even though at some points I was tired , I enjoyed this trip quite a lot. I am looking forward for next year to take another tour of the ones Rancho Wendy is offering. Once again, thank you. Fabio Rosario & Friends |
Barry & Anna - Lanzorate, The Cannery Islands (ask for Charlie's Bar): 12/2008 We spent three lovely days/nights up in Rancho Wendy with Keith and Marshall. We were in the Dominican Republic freelancing on two weeks holidays. We got a little bored of the main seaside tourist areas, and decided to do something different ,looked up the internet, and found Rancho Wendy. We headed off on our four hour trip up the mountains, and we were greeted with a very warm welcome. When you go from one of the main tourist resorts to Rancho Wendy, to be honest, the standards are very different. You wouldn't want to be afraid to rough it a bit, but the people, the scenery, and the activities make you forget about everything else very quickly. We went walking through the mountains, which are absolutely incredible, traveled around the area on a small motorbike, and the best experience of all, was kayaking down the river. We had no experience of this before, and we went down rapids, through fantastic scenery. It was truly amazing, and that's coming from people who have traveled the world. It's so interesting to see the way people live up there, and it's completely safe, and it's a great place to reflect on life with very friendly company. We would recommend anyone hanging around the Dominican Republic, to take time to visit these lovely people in this truly beautiful part of our world. If you do have the possibility to go there, send our regards to them all. - Barry and Anna. |

Happy New Year. I am looking out my office window at 20 cm of snow
on the ground and wishing I was back in the DR. I
have attached a photo taken after our great rafting adventure. It
was awesome and we hope to repeat it again soon. All the best.
Alex | Nurit - Israel: 6/2008 I had an incredible time with all of you at the Ranch. Thank you for the wonderful hikes, food, and great company. I can't wait to come back and see what you are all up to. PS - My love to Blanco, Maybe, Ariel, Mono & Carlos.
| Jay McLaren - Georgia, USA: 2008 Rancho Wendy is AWESOME!!!! I had a great time, the scenery is beautiful, the food is fantastic, and the people are friendly. Definitely a get-a-way place.
| Patrick Bisaillon - Hartford, Connecticut, USA: 2008 The beach scene is relaxing but I'm missing the adventure and friendship that I had at the Rancho. Good times. I hope all is going well with the whole crew.
| Tanya Straker - Brooklyn, New York, USA: 2/2007 I really enjoyed my three day stay at Rancho Wendy. As a woman traveling alone in a country where I did not speak the language I was welcomed like family and well taken care of. From hiking the Killer Trail to visiting a rural school to sitting down to dinner with an eclectic group of travelers everything was great. I look forward to coming back to visit again.

Becca Bench -Seattle, Washington, USA: 3/2006 Well, I came here late at night, and now I’m leaving early in the morning…3 and ½ months later. A bit apprehensive coming from the states alone, 22 year old girl, never had been outside of the country (except on a cruise ship). But I have to say that this is a place where anyone can come, feel safe, and have a second home. Working here, I have learned a lot from this business, and from the owner, Marshall. Ramona, his wife, has been my Dominican mother here- always cooking, cleaning, and able to give good advice. And Wendy, a truly free spirited, artistic child- always buried in a book. The surroundings are breath-taking. And the thing I will miss the most is waking up to the beautiful mountains, the horses, the running canal, and most of all the kind hearts that stay here. There is never a dull moment at Rancho Wendy. I am thankful to have been able to work here, meet travelers from around the world, experience a new culture, and have a loving family in the Dominican Republic. I miss you all already!!

Dennis - Florida, USA: 2/2006 My trip to Rancho Wendy in the mountains of the Dominican Republic will remain one of the many highlights of my short time off this winter. I met several other like-minded people, mostly Americans, the ever-accommodating hosts of the Hostel, Marshal Zipper, his wife, Ramona & Becca. We also enjoyed the company of 1 British, Nigel, at the hostel. Of course, I met several Dominicans while in the area. All people that I encountered have left a lasting impression in my mind.
Our host, Marshall Zipper, keeps us going. He directs us to hikes and scenery that is spectacular. He tries hard to keep us busy. His wife, Ramona, cooks up delightfully simple meals that are wholesome, plentiful and filling. Ramona always had coffee ready for me and the other guests in the morning. We enjoyed eggs, sausage, bread & oatmeal for breakfast; beans & rice, fried chicken, lechon (roast pork), boiled green bananas, Sopa de fidello (chicken noodle soup), etc. Bottled water is always available anytime you need to fill up your personal bottle before an excursion. The meals are a welcome social gathering for all of the travelers in the hostel. The main room of the hostel is large and can accommodate many of us at once and/or in a couple of sittings for each of our meals. Lunches were mostly a welcome break while hiking. The accommodations are comfortable and simple as well. I enjoyed the pleasant, soothing sounds of the rushing water front room. All night I heard the creek about 4 paces from my door. I found the nights to be cool enough to request a blanket. I heard there was hot water, but after hiking all day, the cold water shower was refreshing and invigorating. This is a place that I will visit again. Rancho Wendy is calling me for another adventure. | Ravi - Seattle, Washington, USA: 3/2006 As a volunteer in the Abroad program at Rancho Wendy, I had many opportunities to practice my Spanish. I taught children who spoke no English in a rural school in the mountains, I played pool with locals down the street, and I had dinner with a local family. All these experiences allowed me to learn Spanish very quickly. Although I still need much more practice, I'm grateful to Rancho Wendy for providing this chance to learn a new language.
| Helena and Mats - Malmo, Sweden: 3/2006 We are on a long trip that started on Cuba in the beginning of February and will end in Buenos Aires the last days in April. We decided to stay one week on Rancho Wendy before getting up in the Andes around Quito. Here we have had a wonderful time with horse riding, trekking, carnival in Bonao and also we have meet a lot of interesting people staying here for a shorter or longer period. Most of all we want to thank our hosts Marshall, Ramona and Wendy. They have done everything to make our stay unforgettable. Rancho Wendy has a special atmosphere close to the mountain but nevertheless near to the domestic people. There are a lot of different animals on the ranch, horses dogs, ducks, hens, not to forget the cats.
| Christopher - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA: 3/2006 I am here at Rancho Wendy from Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA and I have to say that the Rancho Wendy experience is sort of a mezcla of story-book romance and reality TV. By this I mean that it is all the beauty and adventure that you can or could ever read of or imagine, but it also proves that "truth is stranger than fiction". Breath-taking scenery and a dynamic throw-back to a simpler life is what Rancho Wendy is to me.
| Carl - Wisconsin, USA: 2/2006 In December of 2005, the urge to do some traveling, in the not so traveled part of the planet, bit me hard. I needed an adventure fix. Leaving Wisconsin winter for a bit warmer climate had some attraction. I wanted to go somewhere that I could do some exploring of a different culture and landscape. I only had three weeks to work with, so it had to be somewhere that wouldn't take up too many "getting there days". I started looking on the net for somewhere in central America or the Caribbean.
I stumbled across an inexpensive flight to the Dominican Republic. I did a little research on the web and the DR had an appeal. When I travel, I like to get to places that are not on the beaten path. I much prefer small villages and countryside to cities and beach resorts. While traveling in other parts of the world, I have stayed in hostels and found them to be places where travelers paths cross. They also tend to be places that offer a wealth of information on the areas they serve. I did a search on Google for hostels in the Dominican Republic. That brought me to Rancho Wendy.
After one long travel day, I was delivered to the doorstep of Rancho Wendy by the motoconcho that was the last leg of the journey. The darkness when I arrived kept me from knowing what a gem I had found until the next morning when the sun lit up the clouds clinging to the mountaintops that surround Los Quemados.
Marshall, Ramona and Wendy have created and continue to develop a friendly service for travelers who want to explore this delightful corner of the planet. They are always looking for new ways to help travelers experience the real DR at the same time helping the local people also learn from their guests. They were more than helpful in helping me get to the places I wanted to go in the area. When I wanted to hike to the Taino cave, Marshall's working relationship with local young folks, working as guides was vital. There is very little chance of finding this one on your own. It's a serious hike up the mountain to get to this rock shelter with many carvings.
Be sure to make use of the horses, bikes and small motorcycles that they have available for you. Good ways to explore the area. Brush up on your domino playing, there will be a game going on somewhere nearby. Hang out, watch, someone will invite you to sit in on a game or two. Expect to find well worn billiard tables in some places you wouldn't think. Take lots and lots of photos. (I took too few) Be prepared to want to return.
| Lonnie - United States: 2006 “In the heart of the Dominican jungle lives a donkey with the most spectacular view. After a 10 mile hike up the mountains we discovered a land rich with friendly people and beauty at every turn. I recommend a trip up to the Ranchero Wendy to anyone looking for a unique experience!”
| Kennia - Netherlands: 2006 Hello my name is Kennia, from Holland (Amsterdam). I am here with my boyfriend, Mark and my family from San Pedro de Macoris. We came all the way from San Pedro de Marcoris by bus, which took us about 4 hours, we were so tired we just wanted to crash down. Marshall Zipper, the host of the hostel was so nice to pick us up at the bus station. When we finally were driving toward to rancho Wendy, we got more and more exciting seeing all the nature and hills around us. We got a warm welcome when we arrived at the hostel, after that we took a short walk thru the street.
The next morning we went to see a beautiful waterfall, by horse. It was a long and rough trip; we had to cross rivers by horses. But at the end it was all worth it. We were in paradise; the water was clear and so natural you could drink it. We had a great time climbing the rocks of the waterfall and swimming in the pure water. Thanks for the great time. Greeting, Kennia Arrindell
| Andrea & Karl: 3/2006 Hi, Me and my friend stayed at the ranch for only two days and one night but had an experience we won’t forget. When we arrived after a rough bus ride we just sat down in the garden by a small river relaxing for a couple of hours. Then we were accompanied by two girls that were also staying at the ranch, and we spent the night eating delicious home made food by a bon fire that we light up ourselves.
The next morning we saddled up three horses and went out on a beautiful horse ride, with the Ranch owner Marshall as our guide. We spent at least four hours on the back of the horses riding through astonishing landscapes in the mountains. Thanks for a pleasant visit! Andreas & Karl (The two Swedes) | Gwen & Emily - USA: 7/2006 Everyday was my favorite day at Rancho Wendy. My sister and I had searched numerous websites, looking for an interesting eco-tour. Rancho Wendy had the most diverse itinerary and the most welcoming appeal. Our expectations were blown away as soon as we arrived, in the best sense possible! Emily and I were welcomed into the Rancho Wendy family and always felt welcomed by the Dominican people.
From an environmental standpoint, the Dominican Republic is diverse enough to make your mind reel. Every plant has uniquely adapted to the tropical surrounding that the island provides. The colors of the vegetation are vibrant and vivid. The abundance of naturally growing fruit was incredible. As an enhancement to the beautiful environmental surroundings, is the vibrant culture of the Dominican people. Emily and I met so many new friends on our adventure. The adventures that Emily and I embarked on where thrilling. Every day was my favorite because everyday provided a new challenge which brought new rewards. From horseback riding through the crystal clear streams to hiking through mountain villages, everyday was simply incredible. Emily and I choose the eight day adventure/beach tour. The beach was also almost indescribably beautiful. The beach offered: lush coconut tree stands, warm ocean water, a cool breeze, and of course, the warm sun. The clean, sandy beach contained hammocks, lounge chairs, and much relaxation! I recommend this vacation! I came home with a renewed perspective on my own life and also the world. My first day back to work I told my boss the stories of our trip. He responded, “You know you have a great vacation when you don’t want to come home!” | Karla & Eszter - USA and Hungary: 2006 We both enjoyed our time here!!!! Great hospitality. Great food! Ask someone to take you to the waterfalls, make sure you cross the river! Go for the three hour walk around the town. The fireflies in the room are awesome at night! You'll love your stay.
| Christy - Washington DC, USA: 2006 Rancho Wendy was an incredible experience for me. The people were amazing, the scenery is stunning, the food great, and the music will make you dance. If you come bring fireballs for the kids and M&Ms for Marshall, they love em!
| Ben and Carrie - USA: 2007
We really had a great time at Rancho Wendy! We would recommend it for anyone who is interested in an adventure to some of the most beautiful parts of the Dominican Republic. We look forward to returning soon!! |
Chris, Brian, Chris & Silva - USA: 12/2006 We enjoyed ourselves so much, thank you for the opportunity to come stay up there and experience the much slower and laid back life of the mountains. It was a good experience for all of us. And thank you so much for all you did with the rental car and Avis. We love your family, you are truly blessed. With their son the Big Guy, a.k.a. the hummer, Joel; and Michelle Draper, the cousin to Chris, some B.S. Go avis! Sick em “Mad Dog Marshall.” For the real trail experience, with mud and guts, take the trail to the waterfalls, Charco bonito! Thanks for your hospitality and wonderful family. Ramona is a wonderful cook and the café was good. Your daughter, Wendy is a real B.S. at cards and a good pool player too! Thanks for the our most memorable time.

I found this picture of you helping in the hospital, I hope you like it. | Tina & Katrin - Germany: 2006 Dear Marshall, Wendy and Ramona! Finally we and our ants arrived save back in Germany. | Terry Stephens and daughter, Wendy Crabtree: 1/2007 We had a very nice time at Rancho Wendy, Thank you! We came with the idea that we would do a little volunteering and a little outdoor adventuring. During our 4-day stay, and despite a bit of rain, we were able to do several hikes and some horseback riding. We also had the opportunity to take some donated clothes to the hospital in Bonao, teach an art class with the local kids in town, and do some tutoring. Best wishes with upcoming projects!
| Ramiro and Nathaly - VT/NY, USA: 2/2007 We came for a short two-day stay, mostly as a stay over place. The country side is beautiful. The vista of the surrounding mountains was the highlight of the trip. Rancho Wendy is a very cost effective, low key stop to make on your way through the island. On the morning of our last day, we took a short hike on horseback to a little local waterfall. If you’re looking for an inexpensive, relaxing stay in the mountains, Rancho Wendy’s your best bet.
| Susanne, Eugen & kids - Alaska, USA: 1/2007 Our kids had a blast with all the animals, especially they loved the horses.

| Katie - Australia: 2006
You know I had the most wonderful time in the Dominican Republic and my highlight was definitely making it to the top of Pico Duarte - whether with a view or not the adventure is something which I will treasure forever.....same too the wonderful friends I met while I was there - your & your family's warm and open hospitality has remained in my mind since leaving and each day it reminds me that there really are precious people out there. This has been a wonderful thought to have carried around this last month and I am thankful to you for that. | Tiffany and Rene - Gainesville, Florida, USA; 2007 High altitude reduces oxygen to the brain!! J I am so proud to have them here. Marshall
| Keera Dwulit (Teacher) & Upper St. Clair HS - Pennsylvania, USA: 2007 I am so proud to have been part of our trip to Rancho Wendy and the rest of the Dominican Republic. Coming to Rancho Wendy was the chance of a lifetime and I truly wish to visit again soon. I have learned so much from the people of this community and my true hope is that my son grows up with half of the spirit, determination, and trust in God and the good of other people that the people of the Dominican Republic and Haiti have. Thank you Marshall and the staff of Rancho Wendy - we'll miss you!!! | Melanie Grubisha I am inspired by this experience and can't wait to be a part of another mission trip sometime in the future. I think one of the most amazing things was the trip up to the baseball village midweek where we found a small community and many impoverished families. The smallest children were unclothed and although a tiny bit hesitant at first, the children, from smallest to oldest, soon accepted us with an unspoken understanding that we were there to help. It reminded me that we often get caught up in all the small little details of life when all we really need to do sometimes is step back and see the world with faith like a child. I want to thank the Rancho Wendy staff for giving me the chance to do just that - God bless!
| Nicole Gans - USA I have had quite a life-changing experience here at Rancho Wendy. It was very touching to see the sense of community that all of the people here in the Dominican have. Being here also instilled a sense of trust and love among the entire group that came here together, and I can only hope that our passion and desire to help will continue back in the United States. It is a great feeling to know you can help, and that the smallest actions can make a difference and change the world- even if that is only the world of one person. Thanks to everyone at Rancho Wendy for giving us a broader perspective of the world and encouraging us to chase my dreams, because everything is possible!! God Bless.
| Todd Flynn (Teacher) - USA I have had a wonderful experience with the people of the Dom. Republic; our students have grown and matured and are looking forward to their return trip!
